Popularly known as Babasaheb, Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar was an Indian economist, politician, jurist and social reformer. Born on 14 April 1981, he was the one who inspired the Dalit Buddhist movement and had fought against social discrimination prevalent in the society in his time. Also known as the architect of Indian Constitution, Dr. B R Ambedkar was also the first Law Minister of independent India. On his 127th birth anniversary, let’s have a look on his life.

He was born to Ramji Maloji Sakpal and Bhimabai Sakpal in the military cantonment of Mhow in Madhya Pradesh. Dr. Ambedkar was born into a poor low Mahar (dalit) caste. This community was treated as untouchables and subjected to socio-economic discrimination. Since childhood, he had faced social discriminations. He had got married at a tender age of 15 years with Ramabai. Being a bright student, he had finished his education from various prestigious universities like Columbia University and London School of Economics.

His contribution to the society
Ambedkar had initiated his early career as an economist, professor, and lawyer. Later on, he had entered the politics and get involved in campaigning and negotiations for India’s independence, advocating political rights and social freedom for Dalits. He had also contributed significantly to the establishment of the state of India.

To commemorate Babasaheb, several events will take place. On the eve of birth anniversary of Ambedkar, PM Narendra Modi will today inaugurate the Dr Ambedkar National Memorial in Delhi. In the birth place of Babasaheb Mhow, three-day celebration is going on Thursday. President Ram Nath Kovind will celebrate Ambedkar Jayanti on Saturday in Madhya Pradesh’s Mhow.
