It has been almost three months since the Samajwadi Party ‘family feud’ rolled out on the streets of Lucknow to attract public sympathy. The tragicomic fight between uncle Shivpal Yadav and nephew Akhilesh Yadav resulted in the split of the party culminated with Mulayam suspending son Akhilesh and his ally Ramgopal Yadav. When the SP rift came out in the open, allegations started flying thick and fast in the city.

While the supporters were sympathising with their respective idols, a shocking revelation by Steve Jarding turned the tables last week. Jarding, who’s the poll strategist of Samajwadi Party for 2017 UP elections exposed the dirty politics played by SP leaders. Just for the information, Jarding was a political advisor to Hilary Clinton. After the shocking results of the US presidential elections, it isn’t surprising if we doubt his strategies.

Nevertheless, an email sent by Jarding on 24th July revealed that the recent split was just an orchestrated drama by SP supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav. It was done to eliminate Shivpal from the scene and project CM Akhilesh in the clean light. The idea was to consolidate Akhilesh’s position as a strong decision-maker, when he clearly failed to make a difference to the state.

Considering that UP has emerged as the crime capital of India in last few years, Jarding advised Uttar Pradesh CM to promote infrastructure projects in the city to gain the public vote of confidence. Despite many projects like Lucknow Metro and Agra-Lucknow highway were half-complete, the CM rushed with multiple inaugurations to promote his glorious achievements for 2017 UP election.

When it failed to make a mark, he sacked Gayatri Prajapati, state mining minister who was charged for illegal mining ventures. In time, he stripped the senior leaders (including uncle Shivpal Yadav) of key ministerial portfolios to build up a lily-white image for himself. Sadly, the public could see through the drama that didn’t help the party.

All these factors tarnished the clean image of UP chief minister. Add to it currency crisis resulting from demonetisation that put an end to lavish rallies and freebies for SP leaders. In such circumstances, the leaders were left with nothing, except to project the strong decision-making abilities of Akhilesh Yadav.

According to the political analysts, SP Supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav had very few options left with him. As the 2017 UP election was nearby, he wanted things to stay as it is. Had he placed someone else in Akhilesh’s position, it would have affected the party’s prospects. Moreover, seeing that neither BJP nor Congress was interested in the coalition, this was the best that they could come up with.

Now that they’re completely exposed in public, it’ll be interesting to see the results of UP state assembly polls. With Modi’s rising power and Mayawati’s Dalit card, it’ll be difficult to predict the results of UP elections.
