Life, as a woman is difficult in the patriarchal society of India. But then, it wasn’t easy, to begin with. Despite social limitations, cultural restrictions, gender-based hurdles and personal jabs, there were several women, who created history this year. As we bid farewell to 2016, here’s to 7 wonderful women who made a huge impact in our society this year.

  1. Sophia Qureshi

Lieutenant Colonel Sophia Qureshi is the first Indian woman officer to lead a 40-member Indian Army contingent at ‘Exercise Force 18’, an international military exercise. It was the biggest multinational exercise hosted by Indians. Not only this, she also represented the first women CRPF team at a public march conducted on Republic Day (26 January) this year.

This year, the daughters won several laurels for India at Rio Olympics 2016. After putting in relentless efforts in practice for countless years. Sakshi Malik, an Indian freestyle wrestler from Rohtak won a bronze medal for India in the 58-kilogram category.

Secondly, P.V. Sindhu, a famous badminton player won a silver medal against world-qualifier Carolina Marin. She was the youngest Indian women to win a medal at the Olympics.

Deepa Karmakar, who unfortunately ranked 4th in the female gymnastics category lost the bronze by 0.150 marks. Nevertheless, she was the first Indian gymnast to qualify for the semi-finals.

Deepa Malik receives a special mention in this list because she’s the first Indian woman to qualify for Rio Olympics, despite her physical disability. Due to a tumourous growth in her spinal cord, Deepa lost the mobility of her lower torso around 17 years back. Deepa received 183 stitches in her lower body from 31 operations in these years.

However, her physical condition didn’t prevent her from performing well in the Olympics. Deepa became the first Indian woman to win a medal at the Paralympics. She bagged a silver medal in short put in 2011 and 2016.

Indian shooter Hina Sindhu became the first woman to raise voice against women oppression in Iran. Though she qualified for the 9th Asian airgun Shooting Championship that was scheduled in Iran. Since it was mandatory for the shooters to wear a Hijab (Veil) at the event, Hinda withdrew her name. Thus, she set an example for millions of Muslim women in the country, who face the brunt of age-old social customs.
