“Those were the days!”

We don’t even know how many times have we said this to each other while reminiscing our childhood days. The childhood phase was all about carefree innocence. Especially the games we used to play with our friends from the colony. Evenings had a particular time to gather everyone out of their homes. Playing familiar games with familiar faces and at a familiar place was the best part of childhood. Its nostalgia which beautifully brings back all those fun memories which we shared while playing the craziest of games and the rush from past overcomes us very easily mainly because we all have happily lived that part of our lives. Also there’s no denying the fact that we do miss it.

As a simple trial to not let the future generation be unaware of the games we used to play, here is one list of Indian childhood games which for some might bring a lot of memories and others will realize how simple and equally fun old time games were.

1. CHAIN CHAIN

9.

The denner in this has to catch all the other players and form a chain. To win all the players should be a part of the chain and help the denner to catch the free ones.

2. STAPOO (Hopscotch)

8.

On the floor a pattern is made of rectangular boxes with numbers written on each. The player has to place a stone on the numbers in ascending order and complete rounds while hopping. If any line is touched while hopping, the player gets out.

3. CHUPPAN CHUPAI (Hide and Seek)

7.

One denner has to find out all the hidden players in a given area. They get some time to hide as the denner counts blindfolded.

4. PITTHU

6.

It involves a ball and a pile of flat stones stacked on top of each other. One member of a team throws the ball at the stack to knock the stones over. Then the other team members try to restore the pile of stones while the opposing team attempts to throw the ball at them. If the ball touches a person, he is out and his team continues without him.

5. FOUR CORNERS

55.

The denner is free and other take one of the four corners. The aim for others is to switch between corners without being called out by the denner in between the switching. If the denner sees then that player becomes the denner.

6. ICE WATER (Baraf-Paani/Vish-Amrit)

54.

The denner has to turn all the other free players into ice i.e stagnant position. The free players can make it harder for the denner by unfreezing the ‘iced’ players by touching him/her and calling out ‘water’. The game continues till all are ice.

7. DOG AND THE BONE

53.

The game consists of two teams. There is an object such as a bottle or handkerchief which is designated as the “bone.” A player from each team comes forward and attempts to take the bone which is placed at the centre of the playing area and has to take it back to his team. The player who fails to take the bone has to go out of the game.
