Akshaya Tritiya, also known as Akha Teej, is an auspicious Hindu festival which is celebrated on the third Tithi of brighter half of the lunar month of Vaishakha. This year it will be observed on 18th April 2018. It’s said that any donation or ceremony performed on this day has a long-lasting effect. In fact, this day is the most auspicious occasion for performing a wedding ceremony, making expensive purchases or for starting any new venture.

The day of Akshaya Tritiya has a great importance in Indian mythology as it is associated with numerous crucial incidents like the start of Treta Yug, the incarnation of Nara Narayana, and incarnation of Parashurama. This day has the power to eradicate all sins of humans. It’s said that this is the perfect day to please the spirit of ancestors and to get the unlimited glory.

People celebrate this festival by making donations, going on pilgrimages and performing japas. They also make expensive purchases of things like gold coins, diamond jewelry, and golden dollars carrying pictures of many Gods and Goddesses. Besides, people also indulge in deeds like buying a new property, acquiring new business, inauguration, marriage, etc.

On the occasion of Akshaya Tritiya, people wake up early, take bath, and offer prayers to Lord Vishnu and Goddess Laxmi. They also offer basil leaves and sugar candy to the idols and donate barley, which is considered to be the king of all grains. Devotees also observe a fast on this day and read the Vrat Katha (fasting story). One can also chant the Mantra “Om Hreem Hreem Shreem Shreem Laxminarayanabhayam Namah” for 108 times.
