Anurag Thakur is likely to have committed perjury, BCCI fails to adopt Lodha recommendations

On Thursday, the Supreme Court observed that Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) chairman Anurag Thakur has apparently committed perjury with regard to welcoming an intervention through a letter from the International Cricket Council (ICC) to sidestep the implementation of the Justice (Retd.) R.M Lodha-led committee recommendations.

On October 1, the board had accepted a plethora of  recommendations of the Lodha Committee. However, the important ones were not included. This has now become a matter of contraction between the cricket body and the Lodha Panel.

The apex court, is currently considering the Lodha panel’s third status report. The third report suggested for the removal of top brass of the BCCI, asked Amicus Curiae whether or not Thakur committed perjury in the related matter.

To the accusation in question, Amicus Curiae revealed that the BCCI chief had said that he had sought Shashank Manohar’s opinion as BCCI chairman, which the latter denied indicating that it was asked in the ICC meeting.

The BCCI discussed their strategy to respond to the Lodha committee’s demands to usher in required changes in the Indian cricket board.

The recommendations quintessentially constitute of one-state one-vote, age limit of 70 years, cooling-off period of three years, maintain five-selectors and sustaining the powers of the president and secretary according to the earlier Board constitution..

The apex court passed an interim order, thereby ordering the BCCI to “cease and desist” from remitting funds to state associations, only after  these associations furnish a written resolution signifying that it will adopt all the recommendations, which the court has approved.

As of now, the apex court has withheld it’s order on replacing BCCI top brass with a panel of selected officials

Notably, if Anurag Thakur is found to be accused with adequate evidence, then he might as well be seen behind the bars.
