On the day following the spectacular execution of gangster-politician Atiq Ahmed on video, the internet remained shut in Uttar Pradesh’s Prayagraj district, and big gatherings were prohibited across the state.

Lovelesh Tewari, Sunny Singh, and Arun Maurya, the three men in their twenties who shot and murdered Ahmed, were sentenced to 14 days in judicial detention after their appearance in court.

The three guys told authorities that they intended to establish a reputation for themselves by destroying Ahmed’s group. They had meticulously planned the murder and had been following Ahmed throughout the day.

After a post-mortem, Atiq Ahmed’s body, along with those of his brother Ashraf, who was also slain, was buried at their village in Prayagraj. His kids carried out the last rites.

Opposition parties ramped up their criticism of the Uttar Pradesh government in the aftermath of the daring murder, with Samajwadi Party head Akhilesh Yadav declaring that the state is “trapped in jungle raj.”

Yogi Adityanath, the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, met with local police heads and other top officials and exhorted them to maintain peace across the state.

The government has taken no action against the police officers charged with safeguarding Ahmed, despite mounting concerns about the errors that contributed to the tragedy.

Asaduddin Owaisi, a Hyderabad politician, requested the Chief Minister’s resignation and called for a Supreme Court-monitored investigation.

The state government of Uttar Pradesh has given a three-member judicial investigative committee two months to present a report on the killings.

The Uttar Pradesh government has assigned a two-month deadline to a three-member judicial probe commission to provide a report on the deaths.

Ahmed, a former legislator convicted of abduction, was shot dead together with his brother on Saturday as police were accompanying them to a medical check-up. The event was shown live on television.

The assailants had pretended to be journalists. Following the killings, they sang ‘Jai Shri Ram’ and surrendered. The cops did not fire a single shot, and the majority of them were observed diving away.
