Babri Masjid case’s oldest litigant Hashim Ansari passes away

The famous and much talked about case in the history of India is the case of Ramjanma Bhoomi Ayodhya would not have faded away from your minds. The case is again in the news as the old litigant of the case; Mohammed Hamid Ansari of 96 years of age has died early this morning due to heart-related complications.

The report confirms that Hamid Ansari was suffering from a heart ailment for a long time and had already been living with a pacemaker. He took his last breath in the wee hours of Wednesday, 20th June morning around 5:00 am. Hashim Ansari was suffering from this prolonged illness and battling it for the last few years. He was being admitted to King George Medical Hospital in Lucknow after complaining chest pain and congestion. His condition was so serious that he even was not being able to walk from the past few days.

The Hashim Ansari’s death has brought Babri Masjid case in highlights again. He was associated with the case since December 1949. In 1952, he was sentenced to two years in jail by a Faizabad court for giving the Azam (call for namaz) in the disputed mosque. Later, in 1961, he along with six others had become the main plaintiff in the ‘Ayodhya title suit’ filed by the Sunni Central Waqf Board in the court of Faizabad civil judge. Born in Ayodhya, Ansari’s father was a tailor operating from a shop in the Shringar Haat area.

Allahabad High Court in 2010, in its majority verdict, had allocated one-third of the disputed site in Ayodhya to Nirmohi Akhara. The rest of two-thirds portion is to be shared equally by the Waqf Board and the side representing Ram Lalla. Zafaryab Jilani, convenor of the Babri Action Committee, said Ansari’s passing would not impact the case.

Ansari’s son, Iqbal, said, “I will carry on the fight on behalf of my father”.
