Baisakhi 2018: A high-spirited festival of delicious cuisine, folk songs and dances

The festival of Baisakhi, also known as Vaisakhi or Vasakhi, is around the corner. We thought we would very quickly let you know more about Vaisakhi.

As per the Nanakshahi calendar and the Mool Nanakshahi Calendar, Baisakhi is commemorated on April 14 every year and is celebrated by Hindus and Sikhs. Vaisakhi marks the beginning of Sikh New Year and the traditional solar New Year for the Hindus. Talking in detail, Vaisakhi marks the birth of Khalsa for the Sikh community. Goddess Ganga is believed to have descended on earth on this day, and that is why people go to bath in the holy river.

Vaisakhi: What happens on this special day?

The festival ushers the celebratory mood for Sikhs. It is for this reason that Gurdwaras are decorated, satsangs are held. Additionally, Sikhs also hold and attend community fairs, visit local gurudwaras, soak themselves in the holy water of rivers and lakes prior to visiting the Gurudwara. Moreover, Nagar Kirtans are also held, where people savour festive foods. Mostly all food are celebrated in shudh ghee.

“Jatta aayi Baisakhi”

The chant which keeps on running across the vocals of all Sikhs celebrating the festival is “Jatta aayi Baisakhi”, as they move towards the farm lands. On Baisakhi, it is a sight of magic. The farm is thronged by men and women who perform bhangda and gidda (folk dances) on the beat of dhol. Even wrestling championships are held amidst the celebrations.

Farmers arise early on this day and head to their farms after taking a bath in the ponds or rivers. They express their gratitude and express their manifestation of prayers for a fortunate harvest. It is mainly observed in Punjab and Haryana. People also exchange gifts, dance together, savour delicacies and make the festival a fulfilling day.
