While the country is demonstrating huge potential for successful heart transplants, there is an incoming news of milestones every new day in nexus to this.

For the first time, an air ambulance was used in Bengaluru for an intra-city organ transplant on Thursday. The heart of a 45-year-old woman in Apollo Hospital on Bannerghatta Road, was flown into MS Ramaiah Narayana Heart Centre in Mattikere.

The recipient of the heart was a 51-year-old woman patient from Andhra Pradesh. Doctors advised the heart transplant for her as a last resort.
The Aviators Air Rescue Ambulance team provided the helicopter for the transport. A source from Aviators Air Rescue stated that the cost of transporting the organ within the city came up to around Rs 85,000.

The company has deployed three helicopters for the southern region, which have flown more than 150 hours till date.

Quite recently, Delhi too witnessed a successful heart transplant for a person who was declared brain dead. Surprising. Isn’t it?

“Normally, when the transplant is done within an hour of harvesting the organ, the outcome is expected to be better,” said Dr Nagamalesh UM, senior cardiologist, MS Ramaiah Narayana Health Centre.

“I think this is the first time an organ has been airlifted and transported from one hospital to another in the same city,” said Captain Arun Sharma, managing director, Aviators Air Rescue.

At a function in Hubballio on Tuesday, Narendra (not real name), aged 51, tripped at a function, after which he was instantaneously rushed to a hospital.

As Narendra underwent examination, he was declared to be diagnosed with triple coronary artery blockage. After being diagnosed, the cardiologist recommended an operation immediately.

As normal families would have reacted to the diagnosis, Narendra’s family too opined that the operation be conducted then and there.

In order to avoid further delays, the family decided to relocate him. This is when an Air Ambulance came to their rescue. Narendra was shifted to the Narayana Institute of Cardiac Sciences, Bengaluru.

On the plane, the Aviators Air Rescue Ambulance team comprised of a doctor and paramedic from Apollo Hospital.

This team accomplished a great feat: they managed to air the organ from Hubballi to Bengaluru in 1 hour and 40 minutes.
