The Calcutta High Court has ordered a CBI investigation and has requested a status report from the central probe agency, which has been instructed to take quick action amid calls for a speedy investigation in the Birbhum violence case in Bengal. The violence, which has thrown the Mamata Banerjee government under fire, resulted in the deaths of eight individuals. The chief minister paid a visit to Bogtui village on Thursday, where violence was reported late Monday.

Just hours after the murder of Trinamool Congress (TMC) panchayat leader Bhadu Sheikh on Monday, eight people, including two children, were burnt to death in the village. According to the autopsy report, all eight persons were beaten to death before being slain.

Banerjee chastised the local police for their inaction as she visited with the impacted families.

“I never imagined such a horrific tragedy could occur.” On the one hand, war is ongoing, while here, violence is occurring due to the actions of a few individuals. I’m not looking for any justifications. Arrest all of the suspects. “Build the case in such a way that no one would dare to conduct such a crime, and it will serve as a lesson to others,” she said.

The CBI has been given till April 7 to deliver its status report. A special investigation team has been assigned to the case thus far, and multiple arrests have been made.

The high court on Friday turned down the state government’s request for a stay of the order and an extension of time to appeal it.

On Thursday, BJP leaders staged a walkout in the state assembly, claiming that the Speaker had refused to allow time for a discussion on the killings.

“We demanded that the session be deferred and that a discussion on the state’s worsening law and order be held. It was not permitted. As a result, we staged a protest. This battle will continue. “We will hold a rally on Friday as well,” stated opposition leader Suvendu Adhikari.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had condemned the violence the day before and demanded that those responsible be held accountable. “I send my sympathies to the victims of the tragedy in Birbhum.” I am hopeful that the state government would take harsh measures against the perpetrators. Those who commit such atrocities, as well as those who aid and abet them, should not be forgiven. While speaking at a virtual event in Kolkata, he added, “The Centre will offer every cooperation to the state to bring the perpetrators to justice.”
