BJP’s Unexpected Victory in Bypoll Election 2016 Effectively Shuts Up the Opposition

Modi expresses his opinion on the critics and other nuances attached to demonetisation.

Bypoll Election 2016 Results: BJP Makes it Large in Arunachal, Assam & MP; AIADMK Sweeps TN while TMC Retains its Stronghold in Bengal.

Bypoll Election 2016 results for 9 assembly and 4 Lok Sabha seats are finally out. Being the first elections after PM Modi launched demonetisation in India, Bypolls 2016 were preceded by a unruly political slugfest. The opposition attacked the ruling BJP government for the impending cash crunch and hardships experienced by the public. Therefore, the entire country looked forward to the impact of demonetisation on the voting patterns. However, the public effectively shut their mouths when BJP declared its victory in MP, Arunachal and Assam. While we were expecting AIADMK and TMC to retain their stronghold in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal respectively, BJP’s victory was totally unexpected considering the hostile scenario outside banks and ATMs.

Bypoll Election Results: Food for Thought for the BJP Government

  • West Bengal

Mamta led Trinamool Congress retained all 3 seats: 1 assembly seat in Monteswar and 2 Parliament seats in Tamluk and Cooch Behar. The TMC government sees it as “Public’s befitting reply against the anti-people demonetisation by the Centre. It’s a people’s revolt, rather than a mass revolt“. That’s actually true. TMC enjoys a strong hold over West Bengal and BJP needs to fight tooth and nail to establish their roots there. They’ll have to focus on persisting issues of unemployment, underdevelopment, migration and poverty to mollify the brunt of currency ban.

  • Tamil Nadu

In North India, politics is all about ‘Modi Modi’. However, in south, it’s ‘Jaya Amma’. As expected, AIADMK candidate rejoiced their victory over of Thiruparankundram, Thanjavur and Aravakurichi seats. This reflects deep communism ideologies involved in the politics of Tamil Nadu. How will the BJP fight this leftist ideology? Only time can tell.

  • Madhya Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh and Assam

People's Mandate Reflect their Deep-Rooted Faith in Modi Government.

When MP CM Shivraj Singh Chauhan won the state legislative elections three times in a row, we knew the party has to win its Lok Sabha seat from Shahdol. Luckily, Nepanagar didn’t disappoint us and helped the party retain its growing position in the state.

Nevertheless, from a party that did not exist in the east, BJP emerged as a clear winner in Assam (Lakhimpur Lok Sabha seat) and Arunachal (Hayuliang Assembly seat) that reflects nothing, but the Modi wave that BJP leaders ride on. NEDA (North East Democratic Alliance) candidate of BJP, Dasanglu Pul won the AP seat by 942 votes.

All in all, the results of bypoll elections reflect people’s faith in PM Narendra Modi. Demonetisation, which was implemented as an unplanned exercise to evade corruption, appeared as a master stroke for Modi. Although the PM promised to fix this cash problem within 50 days, if the Centre fails to deliver what it had said, it can result in disastrous consequences for the party.
