CM Sonowal condemns Assam Terror Attack: Visits to Kokrajhar

Right ahead of the Independence Day, the terrorists had attacked the Kokrajhar district of Assam and made their atrocious intentions clear to the Government and public. The terror attack took place on Friday, August 6, 2016, and took the whole city with a shock. The attack claimed 13 lives and left the whole area into grief. Due to this, Chief Minister of Assam, Sarbanand Sonowal will visit Kokrajhar to city’s review after the attack.

The briefs of the attack were given to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Minister Rajnath Singh by CM Sonowal on Friday itself. There were 15 injuries reported on Saturday and some of them are still critical.

The reports state that the attacks are carried out by National Democratic Front of Bodoland-Songbijit (NDFB-S) at Balajan Tiniali area just a few days ahead of Independence Day. While, the militants were setting up their activities, one of them was even shot dead by the security forces within minutes of the blast.

The CM Sonowal was in New Delhi when the attack took place and then he immediately rushed back to Guwahati and conducted a high-level meeting with the senior police officials and bureaucrats to take the review of the situation. He directed the police and security forces strictly to nab the culprits behind the attacks.

The Union Home Minister, Rajnath Singh assured the full central support to the state Government on handling the issue and to provide any kind of help if required by the state.

CM Sonowal has directed police officials to continue ongoing operations on a larger scale against NDFB-S and capture the rest two militants who had managed to escape after the attack. He also appealed the local people across the state to stay calm and vigilant and maintain the communal peace and harmony. CM announced an exgratia amount of Rs. 5 lakh as the compensation to the families of the deceased and Rs. 1 lakh to the families of those injured in the attack.

Till now, the Assam Police has arrested the auto-driver who dropped the militants to Balajan Tiniali market.

Security arrangements had been tightened up in all four districts falling under the Bodoland Territorial Council, Guwahati and at the important installations all across the state to prevent any further attacks.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has sent a team of experts to the accident site in order to collect evidence. Also, the additional companies of the Indian Army, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and Assam police are conducting joint operations in Kokrajhar. The Centre is also closely monitoring the situation arising out of the Kokrajhar attack.

Union Home Minister, Rajnath Singh on Friday, had chaired a high-level meeting in Capital City to review the internal security situation in the country as the Independence Day is coming closer. The meeting was attended by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar and National Security Advisor AK Doval among others.

Later, Singh had another private round of meeting with Ajit Doval where he was notified of the details of Kokrajhar attack.

President Pranab Mukherjee and Prime Minister Narendra Modi had condemned the terror attack.
