Commonwealth Games 2018: Mirabai Chanu won Gold for India in weightlifting

On the opening day of Commonwealth Games 2018, India made a remarkable start by winning first gold medal. World champion and CWG record holder Saikhom Mirabai Chanu won gold for India in the women’s 48 kg weightlifting event. In the process, Mirabai Chanu smashed the weightlifting record by lifting 196 kg. In CWG 2018, Chanu broke the record of 175kg set by Nigeria’s Augustina Nwaokolo in Delhi in 2010. Before Chanu’s amazing performance at CWG 2018, Indian weightlifter Gururaja won a silver medal in the men’s 56kg event.

Officially known as the XXI Commonwealth Games, the 2018 Commonwealth Games is an international multi-sport event. In this, only the members of Commonwealth can participate. This year, the event is going on Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia. The event has started on 5th April and will end on 15 April 2018. CWG 2018’s opening Ceremony was held on 4th April and Olympic silver medalist PV Sindhu was India’s flag bearer at the event.

Saikhom Mirabai Chanu
Saikhom Mirabai Chanu has won many medals at CWG and also holds the world record of World Championships. For her contributions to sports, the Government of India awarded her Padma Shri. Born on 8 August 1994, Mirabai Chanu belongs to Manipur.
