Dance to inspire, dance to freedom

India is known for its rich cultural legacy. Classical dances are an integral part of the Indian culture. Most of the classical dance forms in India originated in the ancient temples.  India has a long-long history in fine arts and classical dances. Some of the world’s most famous dance forms that originated in India include:

  • BHARATNATYAM
  • KATHAK
  • KUCHIPUDI
  • KATHAKALI
  • MANIPURI
  • MOHINIATTAM
  • ODISSI

Kathak is one of the most important classical dance forms in India. It is derived from the word “katha” meaning “the art of storytelling.”  Kathak, basically is a north Indian dance form.

Unfortunately in today’s time, lack of exposure and limited opportunities have diminished the viability of Indian classical dances.  The present-day youth is unwilling to invest time and efforts in it, considering the cut-throat competition and struggle existing in this field.

We must put in efforts to preserve the identity of classical dance forms that date back to 2000 years. The majority of young dancers are more inclined towards learning modern dance forms today.  Thus, there is a need to create awareness and interests in the minds of the younger generations so that everyone can enjoy colorful classical dance performances.

One can easily learn kathak at home. These days there are many websites, where kathak is taught at basic levels. Once such example is “Dance with Madhuri”.  One can train in dance, at an early age. Who says there aren’t any opportunities in dance? An experienced dancer can work as choreographer, solor or group performer or dance teacher. There is no specific age to learn dance. One must have the willpower to learn this art.

There aren’t any organized courses in dance training. Nevertheless, once can sign up for dance courses at notable institutes existing in Jaipur, which include:

  • JAIPUR KATHAK KENDRA
  • GIRDHARI MAHARAJ KATHAK CENTRE
  • BHATKHANDE SANGEET VIDYAPEETH and many more.

We cannot predict the future of classical dance, but we can surely design it. If we successfully accomplish this goal, the dancers in India will surely have a bright future.
