Amidst cheers, blessings and excitement, Rajasthan’s first flight carrying 30 senior pilgrims took off from Jaipur today. When CM Vasundhara Raje bade farewell to the seniors adorned with floral garlands, their faces lit up with smiles and satisfaction. Not in their wildest dreams, could they’ve imagined that they would get an opportunity to visit popular pilgrim destinations in India by air.

Total 1,000 pilgrims were selected for the scheme via lottery system this year. Apart from the four major tourist hotspots in India, including Dwarka, Rameshwaram, Puri and Tirupati, they’ve included 26 additional religious sites (Vaishnodevi, Sametshikhar etc) to the list. The government aims at making pilgrimage swift and convenient for the elderly, who’re deprived of funds and family support.

The CM inaugurated the joyous air pilgrimage scheme for seniors at Jaipur Airport today. With this, the state sent off first group of air travelers on a trip to Tirupati Dham in Tamil Nadu. Besides bearing the cost of their travel, Rajasthan government will arrange accommodation, meals and tourism facilities for the pilgrims. All services will be free of charge for the elderly.

It’s noteworthy that Rajasthan government has launched 7 exclusive ‘pilgrimage trains’ last year. Out of these, 4 linked Rajasthan to Rameshwaram, Puri and Tirupati whereas 3 ran between Rajasthan, Vaishno Devi and Dwarka. 28 government officials accompanied the senior passengers on a trip to Ujjain and other religious sites to ensure their safety and convenience.

Boosting the Senior Happiness Index is the Main Motto of the Government

Stressing on the significance of seniors in family, the CM said that it’s the duty of every citizen to look after the elder citizens of society. With their blessings, the state will show tremendous progress in every sphere. Since the inception of Deendayal Upadhyaya Varishth Naagrik Teerthyatra Yojana, the state has witnessed sudden improvement in the happiness index of the seniors. The government intends to keep up this spirit in future. Having said that, she said thanked the dexterous team behind this idea, that has put in relentless efforts to make it possible.

Urging them to pray for good health, happiness and progress of Rajasthan, the authorities bade adieu to the first batch of pilgrims. With this, Rajasthan became the first Indian state to send pilgrims on free pilgrimage via air. We’re hopeful that the other states will soon fall into the footsteps of Rajasthan to introduce senior-friendly schemes like this in future. Bon Voyage to the lucky travelers!
