In a shocking turn of events, the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi- Najeeb Jung resigned from his post today, 18 months before his tenure ends in 2018. Jung, who was famous for a dreary and bitter power tussle with AAP Supremo Arvind Kejriwal didn’t supply any reason for his resignation. Though he did mention his post-resignation plans. As per Jung, he would like to return to the first love of his life that is academics.

Jung was appointed as the Delhi Lieutenant Governor in July 2013. He was the 20ty Lieutenant Governor of the National Capital Territory of Delhi. During first two years of his tenure, he was dogged by the bitter comments made by Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal and his party members. Though a few political analysts link this decision with Jung’s clashes with Kejriwal, but sources close to former LG claimed that this was a pre-planned decision. He had been thinking of quitting from the office for last few months.

Putting a stop to all rumours and speculations, Jung finally submitted his resignation to the Centre this afternoon.

Mr Najeeb Jung is the former VC (Vice Chancellor) of Jamia Millia Islamia university in New Delhi. He also served as an IAS officer in Madhya Pradesh Cadre. AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal accused Mr Jung of ‘being an agent of the ruling party’. Kejriwal, who’s known for his notorious ways, created a nuisance for both Jung and the ruling BJP at the Centre.

The tables turned when Kejriwal-Jung battle landed in the Delhi High Court. Delhi High Court recognised Jung as the administrative head of the Delhi government. This verdict came as a shock for AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal, who wanted control of DMC (Delhi Municipal Corporation) and the Delhi Police.

Following the HC’s verdict, Jung went on to set up a panel to investigate 400 files associated with the administration of Delhi. These files were related to various decisions taken by the Delhi government ever since they came to power. Hoping to recover its lost power, the AAP government moved to the Supreme Court against the ruling of the High Court. The case is pending in the SC but the AAP hopes to recover its lost ground next year.

Without creating fuss on the issue, Jung silently handed over his resignation. He thanked the people of Delhi for their unconditional love and affection. Surprisingly, he also thanked the CM for his ‘support’. The Ministry of Home Affairs has accepted his resignation. Now, the Cabinet is holding a discussion to deal with the consequence of Lieutenant Governor’s resignation.
