Ramadan 2016, the holy festival of Muslims and the biggest event in Muslim calendars is around the corner. More than 3 million people in UK prepare and are geared up for the festival that starts midnight today. This year Ramadan will commence on June 6th  and will continue till Thursday July 7.

We as in general know that the festival surrounds around the fasting, family gatherings, greetings and prayers. But there’s a lot more than that to this festival. As the festival approaches, let us tell you some interesting things, you probably didn’t know so far!

  • The festival is related with lunar eclipse and thus it stays around and continues for almost 11 days.
  • It can differ from one country to another depending on the changing weather conditions.
  • Ramadan is a holy month in the Islamic Calendar.
  • They believe in this holy month for the first time ever Prophet Muhammad revealed the holy book –Quran for the mankind.
  • During the days in Ramadan, Muslims pray to come closer to Allah and fast, (no food, no drinks)
  • According to the Qu’ran, the Prophet said: “Whoever does not give up false statements and evil deeds and speaking bad words to others, Allah is not in need of his leaving his food and drink [or fasting]”. It means you must work on your entire self, on your whole person.
  • Iftaar is the event when friends and families gather together in the evening when the sun goes down to break their fasts. Iftaar literally means breaking the fast.
  • Pregnant women, elders, diabetes suffers, and children are not allowed to be on fast during Ramadan.
  • One of the two important holidays of Islam, Eid-ul-Fitr is celebrated at the end of Ramadan.
  • Muslims gather with friends and family at the mosques to seek blessings and wish each other ‘Eid Mubarak’.
