Gulberg Society Massacre Case

A special designated court in Ahemdabad today declared 24 accused now as officially convicted in the Gulberg Society massacre case.

The severity of the case that happened in the year 2002, involved death of former Congress MP Ehsan Jafri and 69 others. The incident happened just after the dreadful Godhra riots in Gujarat. It was on February 28th when an aggressive Hindu mob attacked a society of Muslims-the Gulberg Society in Ahemdabad. Almost all of the houses in the society were burnt including the residents of the society. Also, former Congress Member of Parliament Ehsan Jafri was burnt to death.

The total number of convicts as mentioned above are 24, and out of which 11 are charged against the guilt of murder and the rest 13 are convicted of lesser degree crimes.

A total number of 66 were initially accused in the massacre case, 36 of them have been acquitted. This list of convicted people issued by the court also included the BJP corporator Bipin Patel hailing from Asarva area, nearby Gulberg society. Ironically the Police inspector by the name KG Erda who had lodged the maiden FIR of the case is also one among the acquitted culprits.

 The judge who pronounced the latest verdict in this Gulberg Society massacre case, PB Desai, is the fourth judge appointed as the jury of the case.
