India launches sixth satellite, ‘Desi’ GPS is coming soon!

India launches sixth satellite

10th March, 2016, recorded as a day of great accomplishment for Indian Space Research Organisation. The process of having a satellite network for its own location positioning system, is about to get completed. This was possible through the successful launch of IRNSS 1F the sixth and penultimate of the series.

The seven part series of IRNSS is nothing short of a new revolution. It will allow the functioning of an Indian version of GPS or let us say a GPS ‘made in India’. We no longer will have to use the worldwide American global positioning system as soon our own desi GPS is coming to enhance our lives. It will be quite independent of any American assistance we’ve been using until now.

Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, a centre near Chennai, was the launching pad for IRNSS 1F on Thursday afternoon. It rode onto space on a Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV). Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) chairman A S Kiran Kumar told the press that “PSLV C-32 has put the satellite into the right orbit. We have only one more in the constellation to complete the regional navigational system, which we hope to do next month,”

Prime Minister, Narendra Modi also took this opportunity to congratulate the deserving team with these very words trough his personal Twitter  handle, “Successful launch of IRNSS-1F is an accomplishment we all take immense pride in. I salute the hard work of our scientists and ISRO”
