As per a report by Australian Think Tank, last year, India had moved up four places to 137th rank among 163 countries on the Global Peace Index and in 2018, it has moved up one level above to 136th rank. This is due to a reduction in the level of violent crime driven by law enforcement.

The 2018 edition of GPI is the 12th iteration of the index that ranks 163 independent states and territories in terms of peacefulness. It covers 99.7% of the world’s population using 23 qualitative and quantitative indicators.

India is found to be among the countries with the biggest decreases in the number of deaths along with countries like Sri Lanka, Chad, Columbia, and Uganda. On the other hand, the most increases in the death toll have occurred in Syria, followed by countries like Mexico, Afghanistan, Iraq, and Yemen.

The most peaceful country on the index is Iceland which has been at the top since 2008. Other most peaceful countries include New Zealand, Austria, Portugal and Denmark among top 5.

On the other hand, Syria remains the least peaceful country, a position it has held for the past 5 years. This is followed by Afghanistan, South Sudan, Iraq and Somalia among the least peaceful countries.

In the last one year, the global level of peace has deteriorated by 0.27%. This is the fourth successive year of deteriorations. Out of 163 countries, the peacefulness has decreased in 92 while 71 have witnessed an improvement.

Overall, the Global Peace Index 2018 shows that the world is less peaceful today than it has been at any time in the last 10 years.

Region wise, Europe, North America, Asia Pacific, and South America are the most peaceful in the world but the largest overall deterioration has occurred in South America owing to the increase in the impact of terrorism and fall in security.
