A Special Court in Mumbai has found Chhota Rajan guilty in the J Dey murder case that took place in June 2011. Jyotirmoy Dey, a crime journalist for Mid Day tabloid, was allegedly shot by Chhota Rajan’s men. The special Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) Court has acquitted journalist Jigna Vora and Paulson Joseph while Chhota Rajan has been found guilty in the case.

Apart from these, many others have been accused namely Satish Kaliya, Abhijeet Shinde, Sachin Gaikwad, Nilesh Shendge, Arun Dake, Mangesh Agawane, Anil Waghmode, and Deepak Sisodia.

Here are the highlights of the J Dey Murder case in which Chhota Rajan is the prime convict:

  • On May 30, 2011, J Dey wrote an article in which he claimed that Rajan may have planned the hit on Kaskar and later on June 2 he wrote another article claiming that Rajan’s gang members are missing from their hideouts.
  • The veteran journalist was gunned down on 11th June 2011 by 6 assailants on bikes in Mumbai’s Powai area as he was suspected to be working for Rajan’s arch-rival Dawood Ibrahim.
  • The Mumbai Police arrested 7 sharpshooters from the Rajan gang and also recovered the gun which was used to kill Dey. Due to the sensitive nature of the case, it was handed over to CBI that made Rajan an accused in a supplementary chargesheet.
  • In the investigation, a fellow journalist Jigna Vora was arrested as the police claimed that she allegedly provided crucial details to the don, thereby helping in the assassination.
Sachin Kalbag, the then editor of Mid Day dismissed these allegations saying that there were no chances of rivalry as
  • Vora was far too junior and Dey was far too senior. Two years ago, Vora was granted bail but she was forbidden to speak to the media.
  • The prosecution has demanded maximum punishment for the convicts saying that this murder was an attack on the freedom of the press.
  • The court has found Chhota Rajan and 9 others guilty of murder out of which one accused Vinod Chembur had died during the trial because of natural causes. The verdict is expected to come out by 4 pm today.
