Master storyteller Sujoy Ghosh once again intrigues us with the thrilling story of Durga Rani Singh (played by Vidya Balan) in the second part of bone-chilling thriller ‘Kahaani’ series. As this 2-minute long trailer begins, the viewers get a glimpse of a disgruntled Durga, who is frantically searching for her daughter. But, by the time trailer ends, the viewers feel sad, confused, terrified and confused. We don’t know if we should feel sad over Durga’s temporary demise or frustrated for she’s not what she seems.

As Durga up and down the streets in dead of the night, we learn she’s looking for her little daughter ‘Minni’ who has apparently been kidnapped by an anonymous person. The said culprit called Durga up and asked her to come over to a deserted place “Minni ko zinda dekha chahti ho to is address par chali aao”,

And so, the search begins. Meanwhile she is run over by a car in the middle of the road. She’s immediately rushed to a local hospital where we’re left to wonder what could’ve happened to her. And lo! Here comes the knight in shining armour to rescue the damsel in distress. Sub-Inspector Inderjeet Singh (Arjun Rampal) who investigates the ‘hit and run’ case of Durga, who’s still battling with life in a comatose state.

As Inderjeet frantically searches for clues, his search takes him to an old man’s door, who points him to Durga’s abandoned cottage. When talking with the old man, Inderjeet realizes that Durga is a single woman who lived with her daughter in this isolated cottage. He gets hints of her missing daughter and jumbled up snippets of her life from her diary. He leaves the house, determined to solve the mystery of her missing daughter.

His determination takes him across the town to a faraway police station where he finds a poster of Durga, with a ‘WANTED’ sign on it. Upon inquiring further, her learns that she is not a mother, but a reported criminal, kidnapper and murder. This leaves him confused whether Minni was her actual daughter or she was faking her feelings. A lot of questions come in his mind. Was she a criminal? How did she reach a comatose state? Why did she have a counterfeit passport at her home? While the sub-inspector deals with his confusions, we catch a few heart-felt moments of her times spend with Minni.

We see Minni in a muddled state. She repeatedly says “Wo Mujhe Sone Nahi Dete. Mujhe Sab Theek Karna Hai.” For a moment, we feel that Minni is a mental patient and our doubts are confirmed when we see her jumping down the cliff. A frustrated Durga leapt after her to save her, but we don’t know for sure if Minni died in the episode. In the next scene, we see Durga sharing intimate moments with a man and Inderjeet appears in the background, trying to connect the dots. He feels it’s Durga who has killed Minni and she was trying to flee from country. Her lover had apparently arranged a fake passport for her escape.

However, in the next scene we see Durga claiming “Main Minni ke bina nahi reh sakti, Jab tak main zinda hu, usey kuchh nahi ho sakta”. The story proceeds a couple of scenes ahead and we see the lady in a true ‘Durga’ like avatar: fighting, chasing, killing and running. In the end, we realize that the real hero was not Inderjeet or Durga, but the climax itself, ends with unanswered questions and unsolved mysteries. A chill will run down your spine when you stifle through the flashback of Durga’s memories. What was the mystery, after all? You’ll have to wait for the movie to arrive in a theater near you.
