The planning was smart and infiltrators positioned themselves at the key points of Kargil region. With the help of information provided by shepherds, Indian Army had launched ‘Operation Vijay.’ This operation was aimed at throwing back Pakistani intruders. It was one of the toughest operations as it was fought at the high altitude.

Pakistan had started heavy firing on May 9, 1999. Bofors howitzers were the mainstay of the artillery division of India and contributed immensely in breaking the Pakistani defences. Indian Army successfully recaptured all positions and forced the Pakistan Army to retreat on 26 July, 1999.

India suffered a huge loss of 559 brave soldiers and 1563 injured. After the long eleven hour struggle, India relocated its flag at Tiger Hill, which is the highest peak in Kargil-Dras sector.
