The latest Khadi controversy over Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s photograph appearing on the cover page of KVIC’s diary and 2017 calendar has triggered agitated reactions in the Opposition parties. Khadi Udyog that comes under Khadi Village Industries Commission is the biggest seller of Khadi items all over the world. Every year, the corporation releases new stationary items with a showstopping cover photo published on it.
This year, the group selected PM Narendra Modi as their model. The PM was photographed in the iconic pose of ‘Father of our nation’ Mahatma Gandhi. The picture reflected the PM weaving Khadi on Bapu’s charkha. This photograph was to be printed on all Khadi merchandise this year.
Apparently, this didn’t well with the opposition parties, especially Congress and their supporters who created memes and jokes to criticise this movement. Nevertheless, the government officers effectively put a stop to all these allegations by pointing out that this movement was uncalled for. The KVIC merchandise didn’t carry a photograph of Mahatma Gandhi for the years: 1996, 2002, 2005, 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2016.
So the opposition’s statement that the PM is voluntarily trying to replace the Father of the Nation is misplaced. The bigger question is why didn’t the ruling Congress do anything when Bapu’s photograph was missing all these years?
Moreover, the PM hasn’t replaced the Bapu. Each page of the calendar carries a specific photograph attributed to a particular month. So, the PM is present in just one of these photos. A few Modi supporters have also claimed that the Khadi sales saw an upward trend by 34%, ever since the government sped up its efforts to popularise the fabric. It’s just the opposition who sees this move as a massive, pre-planned conspiracy.
