Kulbhushan Jadhav Case: Pakistan to Change Legal Team as ICJ Upholds India’s Plea

Yesterday the International Court of Justice gave its verdict to stay Kulbhushan Jadhav’s death sentence penalty announced by Pakistan. The verdict was announced by the ICJ President judge Ronny Abraham at Hague.

The country which was terribly snubbed at the International Court took the insult too seriously. Pakistan is all set to replace the lawyers that represented the country at the World Court, Pakistani. This indicates that Pakistan is blaming its lawyers for standing defeated in the case.

Islamabad will appoint a new team of lawyers to defend Pakistan’s position at The Hague, Netherlands-based International Court of Justice,” Sartaj Aziz, the foreign affairs adviser to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said.

Harish Salve was the face of India’s legal team, whereas Pakistan’s team was led by Khawar Qureshi. On Thursday, India accepted India’s plea and chided Pakistan for its uninformed claims.

The ICJ directed Pakistan to not execute Kulbhushan Jadhav who was handed a death sentence by a Pakistani military court in April this year.

The ICJ, accepting India’s plea, said Pakistan must not hang Jadhav until the court hears the matter in full and that Islamabad must inform the World Court of the steps it has taken to ensure that the Indian national is not executed.

Responding to the ICJ order, Aziz, Pakistan’s de facto foreign minister, was reported to have said, “Pakistan’s security is so important and we have to maintain our fundamental sovereign right.”

President Judge Ronny Abraham contented one of the strongest argument in Pakistan’s plea. Pakistan said that the World Court doesn’t have any say in the matter of espionage charges levied on Jadhav. Prima facie, the ICJ has jurisdiction on the Jadhav case, Abraham said. The ICJ will now seek submissions from both New Delhi and Islamabad on their respective cases.
