No more big fat weddings. Lok Sabha bill to curb number of guests and amount of food served at weddings

Did you ever thought that government laws could restrict and hamper the amount of food you serve your guests at the weddings? Even in your rarest dreams, did you ever think that except banning music after 10 pm, there could be an abiding limit on the food quantum too.

Quite recently, Congress MP Ranjeet Ranjan submitted a Bill seeking to limit the number of guests that can be invited to an Indian wedding. It has also been introduced in the Lok Sabha by Ranjeet Ranjan. Moreover, the Bill could be soon upheld as a private member’s Bill in the next Lok Sabha session.

It is also being anticipated that Ranjan will soon get a nod for this bill as it is being considered prudent and rational.

The Marriages (Compulsory Registration and Prevention of Wasteful Expenditure) Bill, 2016, proposes that families that spend more than Rs 5 lakh for a wedding must furnish the precise amount to be spent. Nonetheless, 10% of the amount shall be doled out to a welfare fund that will be established by the government.

According to the bill directives, this contribution will be used to aid families living below the poverty line pay for their daughter’s weddings. These below poverty families succumb under pressure to spend more on weddings.

The bill further states that the government may categorically specify the number of guests and relatives, and the number of dishes served to the guests during the wedding ceremonies.

These efforts are being directed towards ensuring that food is wasted as little as possible. It also aims to shift the benefits of food and enjoyment to the underprivileged.

Ranjan insisted that the habit of luxurious spendings at the wedding is burgeoning, thereby mounting increased pressure on the food resources available for this purpose. He also spelled out that wedding lavishness is considered as a symbol of eliteness.
