He is known for his contributions made to Hinduism. He was a Hindu religious leader and founder of the Arya Samaj. He is Maharishi Dayanand Saraswati. Every year his birth anniversary is being celebrated as Maharishi Dayanand Saraswati Jayanti. His birthday falls on February 12, 1824 as per Gregorian Calender but as per Hindu calendar, it changes every year. In 2018, it falls on 10 February. On 7 April 1875 in Bombay, Maharishi Dayanand Saraswati founded the Arya Samaj. He was also called ‘maker of modern India’ by Dr. S. Radhakrishnan and Sri Aurobindo.

His life
Born on 12 February 1824 in Gujarat, Maharishi i Dayanand Sarawati was a Brahmin. He was originally named as Mool Shankar. Maharishi Dayanand Saraswati was strongly against the idol worship (moorti pooja). He believed in the infallible authority of the Vedas. He had also been trained to lead an austere life.

His works
Dayanand Saraswati had written many books. But his best work was a book called Satyaprakash or ‘Light of Truth’. He made a great contribution to the society as he stressed that all religions teaches same idea but in different ways.

He had also enunciated principle of ‘Krinvanto Vishwamaryam’ i.e. to make the entire world a group of good people. Maharishi Dayanand was against child marriages and supported technology and modern thinking. He devoted his life in promoting social welfare activities. He had advocated social equality and justice and purged Hinduism of its evils.

Celebration on his birthday
To commemorate his birth anniversary, many ritual ceremonies are performed. Many educational institutes in India also pay tribute to him. His followers remember his deeds and wishes to follow his shown path.
