The formidable desert comes to life at the hands of local artists…

First impressions do matter, especially when it comes to tourism! Rajasthan has a history of ‘beautifying’ its railway stations and bus stops to attract tourists traveling by rail and roads. The walls of major stations in Rajasthan, including Jaipur, Bikaner, Jodhpur, Udaipur, Ajmer, Sawai Madhopur and Gandhi Nagar railway line (Jaipur) display intricate paintings by talented local artists. Now the ‘Golden city of Rajasthan’ has joined the league. Recently, the North-Western Railways (NWR) revamped the Jaisalmer railway station with a brand new look.

Mr. Tarun Jain (Chief Public Relations Officer, NWR) revealed the intent behind this makeover. According to Jain, the government has laid special emphasis on cleanliness and restoration of public places. Both these factors lure visitors from across the world to Rajasthan. The authorities have now painted the walls of the railway station in Jaisalmer, keeping up with the trend. Jaisalmer station displays paintings on traditional folk arts, Rajasthani rituals, historic forts, havelis, and sand dunes.

A stray look at the walls will give visitors an insight into the rich culture and traditions of Rajasthan. It was Rahul Goyal (DRM, Jodhpur), who got the Jaisalmer railway station painted. Gifted artist Heera Lal and his team were the masterminds behind this initiative. They made dull and drab walls come alive with their paintings. Mr. Gopal Sharma (PRO, Jodhpur Division) believes the wall paintings of Jaisalmer station will inform the visitors about the local culture. The painters have beautifully projected Godawan or Great Indian Bustard (the state bird of Rajasthan) on the walls. The paintings share legendary tales from history, such as the eternal love story of Moomal Mahendra. There are stories of Patwa Haveli, Sonar Fort, and Gadisar Lake. One can also witness paintings on local Rajasthani music instruments, camels, puppet show, and traditional dresses: things that are a staple to Rajasthan.

The artists have not just painted the walls, but also pillars, ceilings, and windows. According to PRO Sharma, the lively artwork has enhanced the aesthetics of the place. The royal lifestyle of the ancient kings and mesmerizing patterns make it more artistic. Aren’t you excited about it! The next time you travel to Rajasthan by train, remember to add the Golden City to your bucket list!
