Mehbooba Mufti aged 56 took oath Monday morning at 11:00 am as the new chief minister of the state of Jammu and Kashmir. She is the 13th chief minister to the state and the oath taking ceremony took place in Jammu, the winter capital of the state.

Let us tell you Mehbooba Mufti born on May 22, 1959 is the eldest of four siblings which includes her two younger sisters and the brother. Mehbooba Mufti today became the first ever woman chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir. Along with her two new MLAs for BJP took oath in the ceremony. These two new members in Mehbooba’s cabinet are Sham Lal Chaoudhary and Ajay Nanda.

Jammu and Kashmir is the country’s only Muslim majority state and has always been run by men. This is the first time the history of the state that it would be run by a woman chief minister. Mehbooba Mufti will head an alliance of PDP (Peoples Democratic Party) and BJP (Bhartiya Janta Party).

She has a political background and her own 20 years of political career. The interesting thing to note here is that the lady had never lost an election in her career so far. She fought her very first election in 1996 from Bijbehara in Anantnag which happens to be her ancestral place. Later then, she fought and won her first Lok Sabha elections in 2004 from the same Anantnag constituency. Again in 2014 she won the Lok Sabha elections from the same constituency.

She is the prod daughter of the late Mufti Muhamma Sayeed who formed PDP in order to change the scenario of the state and move forward towards the development. She has always been known of not just doing great political work but also of maintaining good relations with the ground level workers and other employees of the party.

An official spokesman said, “The Governor’s invitation to (Mehbooba) Mufti follows the earlier discussions with the PDP and BJP presidents regarding formation of government in the state and the subsequent communications received from her and Sat Sharma, president, J&K BJP in regard to this matter”

She is the second Muslim woman to become a chief minister of a state in the republic of India. It would be interesting to see how she turns up things  in the near future.
