Meizu Gears Up to ‘Make In India’

After the phenomenal success of tech giant Xiaomi in the Indian market, Alibaba backed Meizu to manufacture smartphones next. Alibaba backed Meizu on Wednesday announced that the company will start manufacturing smartphones in the next six months. The Chinese firm considers the Indian tech market a massive pool of success, Xiaomi was welcomed with open hands and proved to be a successful player.

The company has launched its handset MX5 in the market through e-commerce milestone, Snapdeal at INR 19,999 (~$330) for its 16GB variant. The company had already unveiled the launch of its flagship last week. One can grab these handsets exclusively through e-commerce store Snapdeal. However, the 32GB and 64GB variant are still unavailable and will be up for grabs soon.

Li Nan, Meizu Technology Vice President Marketing said,”We have been in discussions with Foxconn and hope to sign the contract soon… We should start manufacturing in India in the next six months.”

India is one of the markets gaining prolific rise in the number of smartphone users may stand on a competent grounds with US market in the next few years. Research firm IDC reveals that, shipment in India grew to 44 percent to 26.5 million units in the month of April-June. The big giants in the mobile manufacturing like Motorola, Gionee and Asus have also triggered in the Indian market pushing the “Make in India” initiative at par.

The smartphone giant, Meizu is headquartered in Zhuhai, China and was set up in 2003. The company extended its smartphone boundaries in the year 2008 and now operates in UK, Germany, Hong Kong, Israel, Russia and Ukraine with the presence of over 3,000 employees. Li added,”We have 15 people here across functions like sales, marketing and R&D. This team coordinates with our team in China… We will increase this number depending on the growth we see in the Indian market.”

Meizu has set up 40 service centers in 20 cities and a good investment may lead to more service centers operating in India. Li said the company will also invest in some brand building activity. Coming to the MX5 model, it has 4G LTE device features, 3GB RAM, 5.5 inches display, 20.7 MP rear and 5 Megapixels front camera with a battery of 3150 mAh. With this initiative, this is another milestone investment, paving their path to India as Meizu gears up to Make in India.
