Mexico Earthquake: 7.1-Magnitude Powerful Earthquake Kills More Than 224 And The Numbers Are Still Counting

More than 224 people were killed when a 7.1-magnitude earthquake shook in central Mexico on Tuesday. Collapsing building in plumes of dust on the anniversary of a 1985 quake that devastated Mexico City.

Thousand fled into the streets in panic, and many stayed to help rescue those trapped. Rescue crews and volunteers come on the ground to help. At least 49 collapsed buildings looking for survivors and bodies.

Local media reported that families were getting Whatsapp messages pleading for help from desperate relatives trapped under the debris.

Earthquake That Shaked The Country  

A magnitude of 7.1, the U.S. Geological Survey said. Its epicenter was in the state of Puebla, about 80 miles southeast of the capital, Mexico City.

National Coordinator for Civil Protection Luis Felipe Puente said a total of at least 138 people died till now.

Memories of the devastating 1985 earthquake that killed 10,000 people in Mexico City spurred panic on Tuesday. People were quickly running for safety outdoors when walls around them swayed and cracked.

“I’m so worried. I can’t stop crying. It’s the same nightmare as in 1985,” Georgina Sanchez, 52, sobbed to AFP in a plaza in the capital.

The earthquake which occurred in the afternoon, after city authorities had conducted an earthquake drill, which caused damage in the bustling center of the city.

“We ran outside thinking all was going to collapse around us,” said Lazaro Frutis, a 45-year-old who escaped an office building before it crumbled to the ground. “The worst thing is, we don’t know about our families or anything.”

Electricity and cell phone service was interrupted in many areas, and traffic was snarled as signal lights went dark, the AP reported.

For Help And Support

Peña Nieto was on a flight to Oaxaca when the quake struck and said in a tweet that he was immediately returning to Mexico City to assess the situation. The government declared an “extraordinary emergency” for the city.

U.S. President Donald Trump, who has clashed with Peña Nieto over his repeated calls for a border wall between their countries, sent his support in a tweet.

“God bless the people of Mexico City. We are with you and will be there for you,” he wrote.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott offered “the thoughts and prayers of Texans” to Mexico and said the state would “continue to offer any support to aid Mexico in their time of need.”

Justin Trudeau, the prime minister of Canada, tweeted: “Devastating news from Mexico City. My thoughts are with those affected by today’s earthquake – Canada will be ready to help our friends.”
