Mumbai Marathon 2018: The Running Festival Showcased Strong Social Messages

Mumbai-Marathon

The 15th edition of Mumbai Marathon which recently took place in South Mumbai on Sunday was filled with fitness enthusiasts from around the world. Regarded as one of the biggest running festivals of India, the event was attended by many known faces of the film and TV industry. Another important highlight of the event was the strong social messages that were displayed at the Marathon.

There were 1800+ dream runners who had put on their jogging shoes and carried placards with thought-provoking social messages and that too with creative taglines. Some of these were just straight forward messages that remain relevant for Indian society since ages like “don’t kill girl child” and “control population”.

In addition, there were more imaginative messages related to menstrual hygiene like “Bleed without fear, bleed without tax” which emphasized on making the sanitary pads tax free, in line with Akshay Kumar’s upcoming film PadMan. Moving on, one read “please keep our restroom clean” which was a reflection of the public facilities in villages, in line with the government’s campaign “Jahan Soch Vahan Shauchalay”.

There were also some messages like “Don’t hang on to polythene” carried by a man who was wearing polythene all over his body, reminding of the environmental hazard posed by polythenes. An unusual yet thought-provoking message was “Men’s Rights are Human Rights too” emphasizing as to how sometimes while we focus on women empowerment, men’s health and justice are neglected.

Although there weren’t any A-lister from Bollywood, the Mumbai Marathon definitely witnessed the presence of some well-known personalities like Mandira Bedi, Milind Soman, Kunal Kapoor, Tara Sharma, etc.
