The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership has secured significant victories in India’s state elections, strengthening its hold on national politics as the general elections loom next year.

Notably, the BJP clinched majorities in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Chhattisgarh, altering the political landscape in these crucial northern states, previously held by the Indian National Congress.

Modi expressed triumph for his party, attributing the victories to the public’s endorsement of good governance and development in these states, as stated on the social media platform X.

Congress managed to secure a majority only in Telangana, a southern state, facing a stark defeat in the closely monitored northern states. This setback impacts its role as the primary contender in the forthcoming national elections.

Anticipated to begin in April, the upcoming national elections, where Modi eyes a third term as Prime Minister, are now poised to be influenced significantly by BJP’s successful performance in the Hindi-speaking belt.

The BJP minister Smriti Irani attributed the results to the “Modi Magic,” emphasizing the Prime Minister’s personal popularity and his ability to sway votes.

Throughout the staggered November elections, the BJP heavily relied on Modi’s leadership, with the Prime Minister extensively campaigning across these states to showcase the BJP’s achievements.

The results in Mizoram, a smaller northeastern state, are yet to be announced, where the contest primarily involves regional parties and holds limited relevance in national politics.

A remarkable upset occurred in Congress-governed Chhattisgarh, a state rich in minerals, where the BJP was leading in 54 out of 90 seats, a significant gain compared to the previous state elections in 2018.

While experts suggest a limited link between state and national outcomes, Congress’s weakened position following these results, especially after Modi’s rise in 2014, remains evident.

A Congress spokesperson acknowledged the unexpectedness of the outcomes in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, signaling the discrepancy between their expectations and ground-level feedback.

With Congress now controlling just one state in northern India, analysts foresee a potential impact on Congress’s role in the national opposition alliance as they plan their strategies for the forthcoming elections.

Recognizing the need for a unified opposition, experts highlight the necessity for Congress to acknowledge its limited support base in the northern region and work towards strengthening opposition unity.
