According to a report by TomTom, London was ranked as the slowest city to drive through in the world in 2023, with an average rush hour speed of 14 kmph. Bengaluru and Pune, two cities in India, were also listed among the cities with the worst traffic conditions.
TomTom’s Traffic Index assessed 387 cities across 55 countries based on factors like average travel time, fuel costs, and CO2 emissions. Data from over 600 million in-car navigation systems and smartphones were utilized for this evaluation.
Bengaluru and Pune were named among the top ten cities worldwide with the worst traffic congestion in 2023. In Bengaluru, the average travel time for 10 km was 28 minutes and 10 seconds, while in Pune, it was 27 minutes and 50 seconds.
Bengaluru, known as India’s IT capital, ranked as the second most congested city globally in 2023, following Dublin, Ireland. The most challenging day for commuting in Bengaluru was September 27, with an average travel time of 32 minutes for 10 km.
In Delhi and Mumbai, which were also included in the TomTom Traffic Index, the average travel time for 10 km was 21 minutes and 40 seconds, and 21 minutes and 20 seconds, respectively.
London, Dublin, and Toronto were identified as the cities most severely affected by traffic congestion in 2023. London had the highest average travel time per 10 km, followed by Dublin and Toronto.
The report highlighted a decrease in average speeds in 228 out of 387 cities compared to the previous year. Additionally, fuel prices increased significantly in many cities between 2021 and 2023, leading to higher transportation costs for commuters.
