PM Modi to Question China’s “No Terrorism Policy” in BRICS Conference 2016

Will China Support India’s Stand On  Masood Azhar Ban? The Outcomes of BRICS Smart City Conference to Decide the Future of Indo-China Friendship.

China’s mixed responses towards Indo-Pak issues have put both the countries in a state of dilemma. While China is backing India with their newfound ‘Say no to Terrorism’ policy, they’ve also assured to support Pakistan in the event of any ‘foreign aggression’. To sort out this mess, Indian PM Narendra Modi is likely to question their stand towards Pakistan’s terrorism attempts at the upcoming meet, scheduled within 2 weeks from now, in Goa.

India-China Conflict Over Masood Azhar’s Ban

Recently, MEA spokesperson Vikas Swarup took a dig at China’s ‘dual policy’ saying they’re the only ones blocking India’s attempt to get a dodgy terrorist banned at UNSC. For those who don’t know, India attempted to proscribe the infamous Jaish-e-Mohammad Chief Maulana Masood Azhar, under 1267 Sanction Regime of the UN. Azhar and his followers are involved in multiple terrorist attacks, kidnapping and mass murder of foreign tourists in Kashmir (1995), bomb blasts, mass destruction and misleading the Muslim mob of India over Kashmir issue.

Indian Government had earlier requested the UN Sanctions Committee to ban Azhar, so as to send a strong message to all the other terrorist groups functioning in different parts of the world. The committee was in the process of taking decision on the matter, until China’s vote on March 31, put the proceedings on hold for another few months. This puts a question mark regarding their ‘transparent stand on terrorism’.

Will India Pressurize China To Think In This Direction?

Indian government wants to get Azhar banned as soon as possible. In this regard, PM Narendra Modi is likely to reach out to Xi Jinping, the president of China, to mull over their country’s decision. Both the leaders will be meeting each other around October 15-16 on the sidelines of the smart city summit. PM Modi is expected to share information regarding Azhar’s activity to stress on the urgency of getting him banned.

Solid steps have already been taken in this regard, when Dai Bingguo, State Councillor, China met with Mr. Ajit Doval, National Security Adviser, India a few days earlier. The speculations are China’s technical hold on the issue already lapsed this Monday. They don’t seem to raise any objections in this regard. If there are no further changes in their stand, the resolution to ban Azhar as an international convict could’ve passed automatically, but we cannot say for sure.

In any case, China’s reaction in the upcoming BRICS summit shall put an end to all these speculations and reveal their true intention towards India. Things would calm down if they side up with India otherwise, the government will have to rethink about maintaining cordial relations with them.
