Prime Minister Narendra Modi selected for UN’s ‘Champion of the Earth’ award

In promotion of solar energy, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been bestowed 2018 ‘Champion of the Earth’ award for their leadership. Along with Indian PM, French President Emmanuel Macron has got this award. This award is UN’s highest environmental honour. There are total six winners of the United Nation’s highest environmental honour. Know more.

Both of these leaders got award in ‘Policy Leadership Category’ for “pioneering work in championing” the International Solar Alliance and “new areas of levels of cooperation on environmental action”.

PM Narendra Modi
PM Narenda Modi got this award for his “unprecedented pledge to eliminate all single-use plastic in India by 2022. PM Modi also supports the International Solar Alliance to scale up the solar energy.

Cochin International Airport
India has also bagged one more award as Cochin International Airport received ‘Entrepreneurial Vision’ Award for its leadership in the use of sustainable energy. It has become the first airport in the world to operate solely on solar energy. It has become the first solar power airport. This is the biggest and busiest aiport in Kerala and forth busiest airports in India.

Know about Champions of the Earth’ prize
This is awarded to outstanding figures from public, private sectors, civil society and leaders from government whose actions made a transformative impact on the environment. From last 13 years, 84 persons and organizations got this award in the various categories of policy, science, business and civil society.
