Rajiv Mehrishi took charge as the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India on Monday.

Who is Rajiv Mehrishi?

Rajiv, 62, is a 1978 batch IAS officer of the Rajasthan Cadre. He has retired officer who has served for two terms as the Home Secretary in 2017.

Mehrishi has succeeded Shashi Kant Sharma, who was appointed as CAG in 2013.

Who is CAG?

The CAG is responsible for auditing the accounts of the Union government and state governments. Further, the CAG reports are laid before Parliament and legislatures of the states for review.

Appointment of CAG

CAG is appointed for earlier of the following:

  • Term of six years or
  • Till the incumbent attains the age of 65 years

Mehrishi holds Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow (UK). Additionally, he also possesses Master of Arts (MA) and Bachelor of Arts (BA) degrees from Delhi University.

Brief history of Rajiv

Before being appointed as the CAG, Mehrishi has held several posts in both his state cadre Rajasthan and in the Centre. He was also appointed as the home secretary. Later, he worked as economic affairs secretary and chief secretary of Rajasthan. Later, Mehrishi worked as a secretary in departments of chemicals and fertilizers, and Overseas Indian Affairs.
