The second day of Parliament Winter session witnessed a sensible, orderly debate in the first half when former PM and Congress leader Dr. Manmohan Singh flaunted his economic know-how. Making a crisp, satirical speech highlighting the negatives of demonetisation in the first half. It was followed by SP member Naresh Agarwal’s dramatic elocution describing the piteous life of a common man struggling due to currency crunch. Amidst all the melodrama following his speech, came Derek O’Brien, who glorified ‘Mamta tales’ and declared this as the second Emergency in India. Then came Mayawati who put forth some daring challenges for the PM and the Parliament went back to noisy scenes that have previously marked the Rajya Sabha winter session 2016.

Here are some interesting excerpts from the Second Winter Session:

Naresh Agarwal’s Drama

Comparing demonetisation to Indira Gandhi’s emergency and Modi to dictator, Agarwal said that elected governments do not work in this way. No government holds the power to implement this decision without seeking consent of both Houses. He added in a few words of praises, appreciating Modi for being the most popular leader of BJP. Thereafter he said, despite Modi being rigid in his stand, he’s not aware of people’s suffering.

Accusations By O’Brien

Trinamool’s brainy nerd O’Brien accused the government for building a narrative that anyone who opposes demonetisation is either corrupt or a black money holder. He blamed them for defaming the opposition for being the devils.

Rajya Sabha After Interval: Mayawati Emerged as the Star Performer of the Day

With PM absent from the second half, the Opposition came down hard on Finance Minister Arun Jaitley. BSP head Mayawati, who should replace Ghulam Nabi Azad as the new Leader of the Opposition was the star performer of the day. Deciding to play ‘truth-or-dare’ with the Centre, she dared the PM to dissolve Lok Sabha and seek fresh mandate. Quoting a government’s survey that revealed 90% people favour this move, Mayawati challenged Modi government to conduct fresh elections in the country.

“If he (PM Modi) says his decision is right, then you should dissolve Lok Sabha and hold polls. The results will make it clear if the decision was right or wrong,” she said.

BSP’s Satish Charda Mishra, CPM’s Sitaram Yechury and Opposition Leader Azad demanded the PM to return to the Parliamentary debate. Following this, Yechury moved a contempt notice against PM, who opted to stay out of this debate. Amidst this chaos and confusion, Speaker P.J. Kurien dissolved the Lok Sabha session (hopefully until the leaders behave in a responsible manner). Now the entire country looks forward to PM making his exciting speech in the next session.
