It’s that time of the year again when the entire Hindu community unites to celebrate and cherish the Ram Navami. This year, Ram Navami falls on March 25, Sunday. This day marks the birth anniversary of Lord Ram.

Lord Ram is considered as the seventh avatar of Lord Vishnu. To celebrate his birthday, devotees observe a fast and seek blessings from Lord Ram. Ram Navami falls on the ninth day of the Shukla Paksha (bright half) in the Hindu calendar month of Chaitra. It falls on the 9th day of the Chaitra month.

The festival marks the overpowering of goodness over evil. Lord Ram is considered the supreme deity who fought all evils, killed Ravana and ushered peace. Goddess Sita, Lord Lakshman and Lord Hanuman are worshipped too along with Lord Ram.

It is believed that on Ram Navami, many Vaishnava Hindus visit temples, shrines. Those who don’t go to temples worship at home.

Ram Navami 2018: Bhogs and Prasad

The ritual of propitiating deities with bhogs and prasad’s continues rt prevail since forever. certain foods that are offered to the deity as bhog, or prasadam. The bhog offered to deities is known as ‘naivedyam’. Here are the most common meals prepared during the Ram Navami festival:

Panakam – A cooling drink with ingredients like jaggery, cardamom, and dry ginger.
Coconut ladoos – prepared with love and made with jaggery, grated coconut and milk.

Makhana kheer – prepared with makhana, sugar or jaggery and milk.
