What is Ramadan?

If you follow Islam, May and June would be a happy month for you. The holy month of Ramadan is nearing and those who observe are busy prepping up for the rituals. Now, what exactly is Ramadan? It is is the ninth month in the Islamic (Hijri) calendar.

Why is it considered as the holiest month?

The month of Ramadan is considered as the holiest month by Muslims as it is believed the Quran was revealed to Prophet Mohammed during this time.

How do Muslims observe this festival?

There is no consumption of food, water and any other substance by the Muslims on every day during this month between fajr and maghrib prayers (at dawn and sunset). Many people also tend to believe that Ramadan is only about fasting and skipping food, but it is so much more layered and intense than this.

The whole idea behind Ramadan is to seek more closeness to God. It is about being spiritually inclined and cleansing the soul. It is about focusing the soul on the Divine power and withdrawing attention from the materiality aspect of life. Muslims either read Quran or spend time in the mosque.

How do Muslims break the fast?

Muslims break the fast with a glass of water and a date before starting the prayers. Post that, they would consume a light meal which is low in fat, sugar, and salt.

When will Ramadan begin?

Ramadan 2018 will begin in the evening of Tuesday, 15 May and end in the evening of Thursday, 14 June. These dates are subject to the sighting of the moon and the visibility of the new crescent moon.
