RBI: New Rs 10 notes to be issued, old notes to remain valid

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Thursday said it will shortly issue new Rs 10 denomination currency notes, while also clarifying that the old Rs 10 notes will also remain valid.

Post November 8, when Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the demonetisation move, all high-denomination notes were called off, including Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes. This announcement hit the market severely. There was an unceremonious urgency to deposit old currency notes to the extent that people died in the serpentine queues for depositing and withdrawing new money.

Initially the country faced abundant shortage in the currency supply. The printing process was upscaled, more employees were employed to cope with the emergency supply. New notes of Rs 2000 and Rs 500 were printed. While Rs 2000 had a pink print, while Rs 500 had a green colour on it. The notes were prepared essentially to mitigate the issue of counterfeiting legal currency, a practice which Pakistan follows religiously. Reports also suggest that Pakistan is also hunting for newer ways to continue with it’s practice.

After the printing of new notes of denomination of Rs 2000 and Rs 500, RBI is now gearing for it’s release of new issue of  Rs 10 notes. “The Reserve Bank of India will shortly issue Rs 10 denomination banknotes in the Mahatma Gandhi Series-2005 with inset letter ‘L’ in both the number panels, bearing the signature of Urjit R. Patel, Governor, Reserve Bank of India, and the year of printing ‘2017’ printed on the reverse of the banknote,” a release issued by the RBI said.

“All the banknotes in the denomination of Rs 10 issued by the bank (RBI) in the past will continue to be legal tender,” it informed.

While, the previous new issues sported a green and pink colour, we are quite excited what colour will  Rs 10 note sport. Any guesses, folks?
