Bronze medalist Sakshi Malik, got engaged to her wrestler boyfriend Satyawart Kadian on Sunday at her residence in Rohtak.

The 24-year-old wrestler won a billion hearts by her performance, had earlier openly revealed about Satyawart in the media. However, the engagement came as a surprise to everyone.

“It was a private function. Only the families of the to-be bride and groom attended the event and it went very well,” Satyawart’s father Arjuna Awardee Satyavan Pehelwan addressed the media.

Sakshi won a bronze medal in 58kg category in the women’s freestyle wrestling in Rio Olympics 2016. She became the first woman wrestler to win an Olympic medal. Sakshi was also given the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award after her commendable performance in Rio.

Satyawart shot to fame after he won a silver medal at the Glasgow Common Wealth Games in 2014. He also won a bronze in Asian Wrestling Championship the same year. He won his first bronze medal at the Singapore Youth Olympics in 2010. He later won a bronze medal in the 2013 World Youth Wrestling Championship in Bulgaria where he became the only Indian wrestler to win a medal.

He is two years younger to Sakshi and trains at his father’s akhada in Rohtak. Meanwhile Sakshi has been training at Sir Chhotu Ram Stadium Wrestling Academy in the same city. Both the families are settled in Rohtak. Both the wrestlers were said to have fallen in love during wrestling tournaments.

Speculations are that they’ve known each other and the marriage has been planned at the initiative of both the families. According to Satyawart, both of them liked each other and wanted to get married. Sakshi too confessed her liking for Satyawart when she earlier said that he is very supportive and thinks of her dreams as his own. (Aww!)

While the engagement was on the cards for a long time, the wedding date has not been confirmed yet. “They both are wrestlers so they have to chalk out dates out of their schedule of endless tournaments. So, we cannot say right now about the wedding,” Satyawart’s father said.
