Gold worth Rs 186 crore is missing in Sree Padmanabha Swamy Temple according to audit report

Sree Padmanabha Swamy temple in Thiruvananthapuram region of Kerela is facing corruptive activities and illegal administrative practices. According to a special audit report of Vinod Rai committee, a total gold worth Rs 186 crore is missing from the financial vaults.

Vinod Rai is the former Comptroller and Auditor general and his report is in two volumes and five parts running into 1,000 pages. It was Supreme Court’s order for Rai to complete the audit and submit it soon and amicus curiae and senior advocate Gopal Subramaniam who recommended to seek the overhauling taking place in temple’s functioning.

Audit report states that “There is a loss of 263 kilograms of gold on the name of purification and the gold worth Rs 186 crore in the form of 769 gold pots are not traceable. There was a lack of transparency in Kanikka counting. Gold and silver worth Rs 14.18 lakh had not been entered in the Nadavarav register, which is illegal. Silver bar with value of Rs 14 lakh was found to be missing.”

Report expressed shock on seeing an abrupt increase of expenditure in temple’s management over all these years and noted it as “abnormal”. As no strict check can overlook how the temple trust illegally sold 2.11 acres of land in the year 1970 and absolutely no records were found related to the deal.

The committee has simply suggested key changes in the temple’s administration system and recommended that “it should now be a seven-member committee headed by a retired section-level officer, tantric, two prominent citizens, representative of state and the royal family.”

The report also recommended some alterations in the temple’s security arrangements and said, “Priceless items in the temple should be housed in a modern museum and security installments need to be altered a bit.”

All in all, Rai through his report is recommending a committee query and keep an eye on these irregularities.
