Today is the death anniversary of Aurobindo Ghose. He is also known as Sri Aurobindo. He has done a lot of work for India. He was not only a great scholar but also a national leader, poet and a spiritual guru. He has helped the world by introducing his visions on human progress and spiritual evolution. He was nominated twice for Nobel prize- first time in 1943 for the Nobel Prize in Literature and second in 1950 for the Nobel Peace Prize.

His life
Sri Aurobindo was born on August 15, 1872 in Kolkata to Krishna Dhan Ghosh and Swarnalata Devi. He died at the age of 78 on 5 December, 1950. He attained his education from England. Then he returned to India and participated in the Indian national movement. His writings promoted the idea of complete independence for India. He was sent to jail for his ideas that lead to political unrest. During his stay in the jail he had mystical and spiritual experiences. After such experiences, he moved to Pondicherry and left politics. In Pondicherry, Aurobindo Ghose had developed Integral Yoga, a spiritual practice. He founded the Sri Aurobindo Ashram in 1926 with the help of his spiritual collaborator, Mirra Alfassa.

Works of Sri Aurobindo
His main literary works are The Life Divine, Synthesis of Yoga and Savitri. His main works also include philosophy, poetry, translations and commentaries on the Vedas, Upanishads and the Bhagavad Gita.
