A man, who was later identified as a student of Jamia, came out carrying a gun and shot at a anti-CAA (Citizenship Amendment Act) rally. In this stupidity, he injured one student as a bullet went through his arm. The injured student was quickly rushed to the Holy Family Hospital which is present in the neighbourhood of the accident.

In the video which surfaced just a few hours back, the man wielding the gun can be heard saying, “Yeh lo azaadi, Hindustan zindabad, Delhi Police zindabad.” Delhi Police personnel were present at the shooting site at that moment. The man was identified as Gopal and has been detained by the police.

The student who was injured in this mayhem has been identified as Shadab Najar, a resident of Jammu and Kashmir and is studying mass communication at the Jamia university. The students of Jamia were getting ready to hold a march to Rajghat on the 72nd death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi when the nuisance occured.

According to Congress and AAP the reason behind this act was the provoking words of Union minister Anurag Thakur at a BJP rally which consisted of ‘Goli maro saalon ko.’ Thakur also encouraged the students to repeatedly chant “Desh ke gaddaron ko” and had people responding with “goli maaro saalon ko”. It roughly translates to “What should be done with traitors of the country? Shoot them”. The Election Commission has imposed a further 72-hour ban on Thakur following this disgraceful act.
