Summer Olympic Diaries from Rio Olympics-2016

Rio Olympics-2016

India is hoping for medals in the Olympics this season, which are in the city of Rio de Jeneiro of Brazil. The event is to start on 5th August till 21st August, 2016. The beautiful city of Rio is situated in Brazil. India has been participating in 1900 Paris Olympics and that year, we participated with a single athlete naming Norman Pritchard who qualified from India. He won two medals being the sole participant from India and made us proud. In fact, not only India, Norman made the whole Asia proud as he was the first Asian to grab a medal in Paris Olympics. He set the path for the Indians to participate in every Summer Olympic Games from 1920.

This Olympics, the Indian Olympic Association is all set to send the largest delegation to Rio with a total of 120 athletes for a total of 66 events as compared to the delegation of 83 athletes sent in 2012 Olympics. So, we are surely hoping for some good news and sparkling medals from our athletes this ‘summer’.

The latest news coming from Rio is about Saina Nehwal, Narsingh Yadav, and Inderjeet Singh.

The lady of perseverance and dedication, India’s star shuttler, Ms. Saina Nehwal is all set to grab a medal for India after shaking off a number of injuries which threatened her participation in the event since the beginning of the year. The good news for India is that now she will step on the Riocentro Pavilion 4 on August 11, in her quest for a medal. Since December 2015, she was suffering several injuries and thus was missing various important tournaments. But her second consecutive win in the Australia Open Title on June 12, 2016, has lighted up many hopes in the hearts of Indians and her fans all over the world. Also, this win had cleared many doubts regarding her injuries.

After good news, we got some bad news for the Indian fans from Rio. The two shot-put players, Inderjeet Singh and Narsingh Yadav have failed the dope test right before the Rio games. These tests are conducted by the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA). Meanwhile, Navin Agarwal, Director General of NADA has refused to take any names and said that “there are athletes who were tested positive but the names are still not confirmed neither their Indian Contingent. Samples of more athletes are tested positive but it is yet to be confirmed that the athletes are Rio-bound or not”. Narsingh Yadav has tested positive a couple of days ago and the news about Inderjeet Singh being positive have flashed Tuesday morning.

This news has shattered the hopes of India winning a medal in Shot-put barely 10 days before the Rio Olympics as the 28-year-old Inderjeet was the first Indian to qualify for Rio games and also he was a Gold medalist in the Asian championships, Asian Grand Prix and the World University Games last year.
