#SwachhSurvekshan results out: Which is the cleanest and dirtiest city of India?

Prime Minister Narendra Modi in October 2014 launched his mission of clean India aka the Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan. Under the campaign, he built 1.1 million toilets and initiated cleaning places. Also he nominated a lot of public representatives from different fields to come up and contribute their bit towards cleaning the country.

Government of India lately announced the results of the survey which was conducted to measure the development being done towards the Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan. The government at a press conference on Monday unveiled the list of the cities that were in the survey. The survey was conducted on 73 cities from around the country out of which 53 cities were the ones which had a population of over 1 million people. The list was revealed by the urban development ministry. Let’s have a look at who came first and who stood last in maintain cleanliness.

The survey was carried out by the Quality Council of India (QCI) and it reported Mysore as the cleanest city of all. Other cities which managed to grab their place among the top 10 cleanest citites of the country are: Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh), Surat (Gujarat), Rajkot (Gujarat), Gangtok (Sikkim), Pimpri-Chindwad (Maharashtra) and Greater Maharashtra.

On the occasion, Urban Development Minister M VenkaiahNaidu said, “To make progress we should know where we stand and what next needs to be done. I am happy that the change of mind is happening and should happen more. Next time the completion will not be confined to just 73 cities.”

Swachh Bharat Urban took it to twitter to congratulate Mysore for grabbing the title of the cleanest city of the republic of India.

On the other hand if we talk about the cities who gave the worst performance are Asansol (West Bengal), Itanagar (Arunachal Pradesh), Patna (Bihar), Meerut (Uttar Pradesh), Raipur (Chhattisgarh), Ghaziabad (Uttar Pradesh), Jamshedpur (Jharkhand), Varanasi (Uttar Pradesh), Kalyan Dombivili (Maharashtra) and Dhanbad (Jharkhand) as the least cleanest city of all.

Zainulbhai, former India chief for McKinsey and the head of the Quality Council of India (QCI) said, “A well ranked city wholly benefits from its cleanliness – by leading to influx of the new-age, economically strong working class population further strengthening the economic market of the city. Power and penetration of technology was used to minimize human subjectivity in the surveys.”

“The assessors were given tablets to fill the surveys and click evidence-based pictures of the locations in the cities. The pictures were also geo-tagged to detect precise locations, ensuring accuracy and transparency. Assessors were not given the option to amend, revise or re-do the survey unless approved or requested by the control room, on a real time basis” he added.

The survey of the 73 cities resulted in dividing the cities in the following categories according to their performance.
