Utkala Dibasa, Odhisha Day or Odhisha Dibasa is observed on April 1 every year. The colourful costal state celebrates this festival, as Orissa was formed as a separate province on 1st April, 1936. The state lost its political identity during 15th century. After the demise of the last ruling king in Orissa (King Mukunda Dev), the locales made efforts to attain political freedom. The British declared Orissa as an independent state in 1936. Since that day, the state celebrates 1st April as Utkal Diwas.
