TIME reaffirms Donald Trump as the ‘Person of the Year 2016’

President-elect Donald Trump, the real estate businessman and political novice whose election campaign recently grabbed eyeballs of one and all, has been selected as TIME’s 2016 Person of the Year.

The magazine revealed its choice on Wednesday(7th Decemeber). This will be Trump’s 10th time on the magazine’s cover. His first appearance on TIME was in 1989.

“To be on the cover of Time as Person of the Year is a tremendous honor,” Trump told Matt Lauer in an interview post the declaration.

However, the President-elect expressed his dissent with the magazine’s choice to refer to him as “President of the Divided States of America”. He reiterated his stance by saying,”I think putting ‘divided’ is snarky,” Trump said. “I didn’t do anything to divide.”

Every year, TIME selects a person who has been most influential on the news and the world in the past year, for reasons good or ill.

“So which is it this year: Better or worse? The challenge for Donald Trump is how profoundly the country disagrees about the answer,” TIME managing editor Nancy Gibbs wrote in a magazine essay.

Gibbs added,”For reminding America that demagoguery feeds on despair and that truth is only as powerful as the trust in those who speak it, for empowering a hidden electorate by mainstreaming its furies and live-streaming its fears, and for framing tomorrow’s political culture by demolishing yesterday’s, Donald Trump is TIME’s 2016 Person of the Year.”

Trump battled out 10 other finalists, including his political rival, Hillary Clinton.TIME declared Clinton their runner-up. Hilton was also the top pick among TODAY viewers.

As far as the history of TIME recognition is concerned, last year’s recipient was German Chancellor Angela Merkel.,whileTrump was a runner-up. The year before that, 2014, Ebola fighters became  the Person of the Year.

The magazine has made the designation every year since 1927. Aviator Charles Lindbergh was chosen as the first Man of the Year, as it was earlier called. In 1999, the title was amended to Person of the Year.

Well, after all glamour and glory for Donald Trump, the TIME ‘Person of the Year ‘accolade has just accentuated  his grandeur and social cum political stature.  The world still awaits to assess Trump’s policies and administration skills. Nevertheless, the Americans have posed great confidence in the top-notch. Indeed, a remarkable journey of success for Trump!
